According to a recent survey conducted by the German digital advocacy group Bitkom, a third of German companies still frequently use fax machines, despite the telegraph being a thing of the past. This indicates a reluctance to let go of outdated technology, which is a well-known stereotype of the German business world. The research published on Thursday highlights the continued dependence on this outdated technology in German workplaces.

Bitkom’s survey results revealed that despite living in a world where high-speed internet and digital capabilities are advancing rapidly, a surprising 82% of German companies still rely on fax machines. This outdated technology, which was popular during the previous millennium, seems to persist in the business world.

Nils Britze, head of digital business processes at Bitkom, acknowledged the inevitable decline of fax machines in the face of the digital revolution. He noted that established communication channels take time to be fully replaced, even by more advanced and secure modes of communication. In other words, despite the rise of more convenient and safer alternatives, fax machines have persisted due to their long-standing presence in the industry.

Fax Machines Face Decline in Popularity and Use

According to a recent research study, one-third of the surveyed businesses reported that they still use fax machines “frequently” or “very frequently.” However, the study also revealed that this figure has been decreasing steadily in recent years. In 2020, the percentage was 40%, while it was 62% in 2018.

Out of the 505 businesses that participated in the survey and had a minimum of 20 employees, half reported that they only send faxes occasionally or rarely. Additionally, 16% of businesses have completely eliminated the use of fax machines.

These findings suggest that while some businesses continue to rely on fax machines, many are shifting away from this technology and opting for more modern communication methods.

Britz, a spokesperson for the German digital advocacy group Bitkom, states that the classic fax machine’s main advantage is its ability to provide clear confirmation of a document’s successful transmission. This feature ensures that the recipient receives the document, which is critical in many industries. However, digital channels have certain advantages over faxing when it comes to data encryption and security. Britze further stated that encryption and security are better ensured when using digital communication channels.
